What happens when you build a kitchen classroom smack in the middle of the pole beans and broccoli? You get a crop of students who not only know where their food comes from (because they planted it) but also how to cook delicious and nutritious meals. The 3,000-square-foot Kitchen House & Culinary Garden is the first of its kind in the United States to be conceived of and built from the ground-up specifically to give students an edible education experience. Orlando Junior Academy's 5th-8th grade students have been sowing, growing, harvesting and cooking since 2011 as part of their core-curriculum, but in a make-shift "kitchen" lacking even the bare essentials. By Fall 2017, they -- and other kids from the community -- will be developing their mad skills in the brand new Emeril Lagasse Foundation Kitchen House & Culinary Garden, located directly across the street from the OJA campus, at 26 E. King Street, in College Park.
